Alma Mater University Institute: In Search of the University Institution
The institutions and individuals behind eUniv shared a common bond: extensive experience in creating and managing university centers, as well as innovating teaching methodologies and developing technologies applied to higher education.
This fact justified the creation of the IUAM as a strategic institutional decision: it was necessary to establish an academic center dedicated to promoting research on the university institution from all social science disciplines, thus filling a historical gap among the universities in Catalan-speaking and culturally Catalan territories. The Layret Foundation, a sponsor of eUniv, supports this goal by funding IUAM’s activities.
Organization of IUAM
The Institute Council
The Council is IUAM’s top academic governing body, responsible for setting its scientific and institutional development strategies, as well as evaluating and reporting on the activity and project proposals submitted by the chairs.
The Institute Chairs
The IUAM Chairs are specialized units focused on specific areas of research. Each IUAM chair has a Director, a Secretariat, and a Scientific Advisory Committee. The currently established chairs are:
- Chair of University History, directed by Dr. Joan J. Busqueta
- Chair of University Sociology, directed by Dr. Jordi Sauret
- Chair of University Economics, directed by Dr. Agustí Ten
Dean’s Office and General Secretariat
The Dean’s Office is the individual academic body responsible for coordinating IUAM’s academic activities, currently held by Dr. Marc B. Escolà. The General Secretariat is the individual academic body responsible for managing IUAM’s academic activities, currently held by Dr. Eladi Llop.
IUAM Activities
The IUAM Annual Program outlines the scientific and academic activities that involve all chairs, as well as specialized activities for each one. The following are general and mandatory activities:
- Annual Symposium on University Studies, held in July; the Council determines the specialized thematic focus, which must allow participation from all IUAM chairs.
- Annals of the IUAM, which publishes the work carried out by the chairs, as well as contributions from specialists from other scientific institutions; the IUAM Council serves as the editorial board and appoints individuals to prepare the necessary reports, in accordance with international scientific publishing standards and practices.
The IUAM Annual Program also includes specific mandatory activities for the chairs, such as:
- Doctoral research lines specializing in their scientific fields, under the academic cooperation agreement between IUAM and the J. H. Newman Doctoral School of eUniv.
- Annual specialized seminars, involving members of the chair and invited specialists from other institutions who collaborate in the research.
